An Apology, and a Fond Farewell
The specific article in question that caused my decision to shut down the site, a faux resignation letter, was intended to be tongue-in-cheek and to be taken in a lighthearted manner. Unfortunately, I stupidly failed to recognize the hurt and anger that the article would cause, and failed to properly address the issue as the number of readers who did not recognize the sardonic nature of the website grew. The fault is mine, and I apologize for it.
As one reader pointed out in a fairly-measured email, most good editorial comes from some form of integrity, and with the resignation letter, I didn’t really have any. It was mean-spirited more than it was sarcastic or sardonic. And sarcasm, in the words of an old professor of mine, is the defense of the weak. I hope that any pieces that I might create in the future will be more positive, more substantial, and written in an effort to engage and uplift, rather than to tear down what many people have sought to build. Nothing good can come of the type of writing that I engaged in. I am humbled and chastised by the effects of what I have wrought, and I can only hope that those of you who laughed along with me through other more light-hearted fare will realize that my erroneous attempt at sophomoric humor here was not something to be celebrated, but instead something to be saddened by.
For those of you who know me, I think that there is an understanding that what I wrote regarding my former company was a complete spoof, and was intended as such. I had no intention for the article to cause such embarrassment or anger; I can only hope that the content of the letter be viewed as a poor attempt at humor rather than mean-spirited. During the past three years, I was lucky to work with many fine people; I pray that my attempt at humor does not reflect negatively on them; indeed, it is my sincerest wish that my immaturity and lack of discretion in publishing such a piece reflects poorly only on me, as it should.
The truth is, my company was very good to me for the time that I worked there, both in terms of providing advancement opportunity and in being flexible to the other parts of my life. It is a company where effort can be and is rewarded, and the article does not offer a remotely fair or accurate reflection of my former employer, or my opinions about them. In hindsight I can plainly see the effect of such an article were it to be passed around as it was. For that, I can only offer my deepest apologies for any negative views that were in the article that were taken the wrong way. It was meant to be tongue-in-cheek, and in that regard, I failed to realize the delicate line between what is seen as humor, and what is seen as offensive.
I apologize for any grief that this has caused the people I worked with for three years; I think that the people at IBT, specifically the employees of the Systems department, are some of the greatest assets at the company. I was lucky to work with and for many fine people; I pray that my attempt at humor does not reflect negatively on them; indeed, it is my sincerest wish that my immaturity and lack of discretion in publishing such a piece reflects poorly only on me, as it should.
In response to this, and for other reasons, I have decided to close down this site, permanently. It’s time to move on, and I want to take a minute to thank all of the people who have contributed to and read the site in the past 14 months. I hope that you enjoyed reading the articles as much as I enjoyed writing them, and perhaps someday I will have the chance to entertain you again, albeit in a far more dignified and fair-minded manner.
Sincerely,
Brendan
